Quick answer: Nail photos look grainy because there is not enough light reaching the sensor, so your phone raises its sensitivity and amplifies the random speckle that was always sitting in the signal.   • Turn on every lamp near the station and bring the desk lamp in close, angled from the side rather than pointed straight down.
  • Take the hand off a dark towel and put it on something pale, so light bounces back up under the fingers.
  • Brace your elbows on the desk so the phone can use a slower shutter without smearing.
  • If your camera app has a manual or pro mode, cap the sensitivity at 400 and let the shutter get slower instead.
